FA HONOURS CLUB COACH AT WEMBLEY

The FA awarded Club Coach Simon Davison his National FA Football Workforce Award at this years FA Community Shield Match between Chelsea and Man Utd at Wembley on the 5th August.

We were treated to a full day of hospitality courtesy of Club Wembley which is situated up high on the fourth floor above the stadiums restaurants and bars. It was great to be waved through the security and, issued with our VIP passes, treated as special guests by all the staff.

There was a drinks reception waiting for us when we arrived where we mingled with several stars of the football world. We were able to get photos and autographs of Kenny Dalglish, Pat Jennings, Ian Rush, Ali Maclish, Lee Sharpe, Archie Nott and of course Sir Geoff Hurst who later presented Simon with his award.

The FA Community Shield was on display and we had our photos taken with it.

After lunch pre– match entertainment was provided by Sky Sports in the form of live interviews with Eric Harrison, Pat Jennings, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish.

We entered a fun table football competition where the prize was to win some footballs for your club if we could score a goal against the national table football champions. After starting in defence I switched places with Simon and my goal secured the deal! I think they took pity on me and gave me a bit of help...

We went to our seats and as we stepped out into the stadium the WOW factor of the huge Wembley hit us. It was a hot day measuring 100 degrees on the pitch and we were high up but luckily we were shaded for the whole game.

We were sat above the Chelsea fans, who were in fine singing voice and had an excellent view of super fast Ronaldo attacking down the wing and crossing the ball. It was great to see so many top players in both teams. Simon had to go down to the pitch at half-time to collect his award, security was tight but he did see some of the Chelsea team as they came off the pitch and go into the physio room and he chatted to Sir Geoff Hurst about the goals they had just seen on the big screens inside.

They made their way through the players tunnel and ,as they announced the presentation over the tannoy, one by one the 9 national football workforce award winners walked up to collect their plaques. At the end a photo of them was put up on the big screens above the fans. We watched the rest of the game and had a birds eye view of the penalties. We stayed to see Man Utd collect their winner`s trophy and then went back to the Club lounge for a post match reception and more live interviews with Sky Sports. It really was a fantastic day, the sight of Simon stepping up to collect his award will stay with me for a very long time.

Welcome to our new members

At this time of year we regularly have new players come into the club, so if this is your first newsletter, welcome!

All new members receive our welcome pack which gives them an introduction to who we are and what we do and a membership form with emergency contact details to fill in. Club Membership of £10 is now due. This pays for the players insurance and club trophies.

There is also a Code of Conduct which we circulate at the beginning of the season to all parents/spectators and new coaches. Please take time to read this.

The Code of Conduct is an important part of the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award and our constitution. We expect everyone in the Club to be able to adhere to it for the benefit of all involved in the game.

The FA has recognised that parents/spectators have a great influence on children`s enjoyment of the game. We also recognise this as we see it first hand at training or match days.

If you are staying to watch training please let the Coach run the session. It is extremely difficult to coach a session if you cant hear yourself speak because parents are shouting at their children. It is also confusing for the child to be told different things form different adults. You will appreciate that certain ideas go out of date and that all our coaches have been trained in the latest, most effective coaching techniques. Parents are invited to watch training sessions but are requested not to shout out. Imagine you are taking your child to a piano lesson, you would not expect to be able to shout comments from the sides whilst the lesson is in progress. Similarly at matches please refrain from being abusive.

Any parent with concerns about their child`s progress is welcome to speak to their coach before or after training.

Please remember that children will make mistakes, that is usually how they learn. Positive encouragement is far better than shouting. Largely, we recognise that children are motivated to win by enjoyment.

We hate to see anyone drop out of the sport because they are not enjoying it. We also believe that it takes time and practice to become a good player. Children will make the same mistake again and again before they perfect a skill. It is not helpful to laugh or shout the obvious!

Certainly no parent would expect the Coach to behave in such a way.

Any parent can take the FA`s Soccer Parent online course or are invited to take the FA level 1 Coaching Course and become CRB checked. The Coaches at Newton Town spend an awful lot of time planning and preparing their sessions and put a lot of hard work into running their teams . They are all FA qualified coaches who have undergone Child Protection and First Aid training and, most importantly, they are insured. They take time out of their lives to train other peoples children and we ask that effort is respected.

We are in the lucky position of having some highly qualified coaches and ex-players in our club, please feel free to ask their advice and to swap ideas, after all football is a game based largely on opinions! Also to help your enjoyment and understanding we recommend you look at the Laws of the Game. These are available on the FA website www.The FA.com

Ultimately we have the children`s best interest at heart.

COACH WINS TOP FA AWARD

Club Coach Simon Davison has won a National FA Football Workforce Award for his voluntary work in football this year.

He was nominated by the Devon FA after winning their Football Workforce Award at this years Development Presentation for Charter Standard Clubs.

The surprise came by letter direct from the FA announcing that his prize is two VIP tickets to Wembley for the Community Shield on the 5th August. He will be presented with his award on the pitch in front of the crowd and be treated to a full VIP day by the FA.

The award comes after Simon won our two clubman trophies at our annual presentation last month for his outstanding commitment this season.  His achievements this year include the following;

He set up a second  11-a-side U13`s boys team (the yellows) and managed them in the league, co-coached the new Adults Ability team, stepped in to  manage and coach the U9`s and  men`s team, supported the girls by helping to coach and referee matches throughout the season whilst managing the U13`s reds and taking his FA level 2 coaching course.

He was also Vice-Chairman of the club and helped to mentor level 1 coaches, notably Jamie & Anthony and helped me through my FA level 2 course. He has also started his FA level 3 coachingcourse this summer and is due to complete it in March 2008.

All this on top of working 12 hour days!

But it has been his attitude to all of his players that has captured the attention of parents and the FA alike. He believes in equal opportunities and has encouraged less able players to develop by giving them quality coaching. We have all seen the improvements in his teams and he has increased the number of children taking up football and staying in football as a result. He coaches to the Long Term Athlete Development Model and makes his coaching sessions age appropriate and productive by using new training techniques.

We at the club are thrilled he has received this award and recognition. This is not the first time Simon has been recognised as he won Coach of the Year for Devon in 2005 .

This makes the number of awards the club has won seven, in four years.

This year sees him become a worthy Club Chairman to lead the committee, to develop the club and its players and to achieve high standards in football and its delivery.

The new  season is about to begin and sees him coaching and managing two U14`s boys teams with Jamie, now a qualified level 1 coach, and the men`s as he hands over the running over the running of the U9`s to new coach Carl ( also level 1).

The U13`s girls move up to U15`s playing 11-a-side football in the Devon Girls League.

The U11`s boys will stay in that age group for one more season with Mo

The U10`s  are again playing  in the Exeter Friendly League. A new U12`s girls team is being developed and the U8`s go into the league for the first time.

The U9`s move in to their 2nd year in league football with coach Anthony and assistant Gary Thomas.

The Adults ability team train on Thursdays and start playing matches in the South West Regional Ability Counts league in September.

Pre-season training is scheduled as follows;

Senior Men`s; Wednesdays 7-8.30pm Decoy Park (starts 18th July)

U15`s Girls ; Tuesdays 6-7.30pm Decoy Park

U14`s boys; Fridays 7-8.30pm Decoy Park (starts 10th August)

Sport England Xtra factor

The Club attended this event at the Exeter Chiefs` ground on the 29th March. Guest speaker was 2004 Olympic bronze medallist, swimmer Steve Parry who gave an inspirational talk on how he got into swimming and how he nearly didn’t qualify for is Olympic final! Other speakers included Active Devon speaking on their step into sport initiative, Running sports , Devon County Council, The Royal Yachting Association & Volunteering England. There was the latest information from the Olympics `London 2012` and a fun Xtra factor event with three clubs showcasing their volunteering initiatives. The evening was dedicated to helping Clubs recruit and support their volunteers. Future Olympic diver Brook Graddon shared with us her gruelling six day a week training regime and a representative of the Team South West outlined what benefits would be the legacy of the 2012 Olympic games for our region. It was good to see so many sports coming together.

Newton Town F.C. A.G.M.

The Club AGM is to be held on Sunday 13th May 2007 at the Jolly Abbot, Newton Abbot at 7pm. Please come and support us. We always need volunteers and its better to have lots of us taking small roles than a few doing all the work! You will be surprised at the effort that goes into running a club this size. We need someone to update the new website with the latest information, a volunteer co-ordinator, a school -club link representative, publicity / press officer and a membership secretary. Although not huge jobs they are important by helping the club run smoothly. Each team is also being encouraged to have a parent representative on the committee and we require parents from the girls teams to do this. Committee meetings are monthly at the Jolly Abbot, usually Sunday evenings. Please give a little time to support your children.

Presentation Event

This year`s presentation event is to be held on Sunday 10th June 2007 at Decoy Park.

All players will be invited to take part in a fun mini-tournament then receive their club trophies and we hope to have a secret special guest to award the more prestigious Club trophies. There will be prizes for the winning team, a bar-be-que and a prize draw for the spectators. We are also planning a parents V managers match again so come on parents organise yourselves! This year the Juniors & Seniors will take part in the same presentation for the first time in the clubs 26 year history. In previous years the seniors always wanted to have a separate `do ` but this year we come together all 150 of us, which I`m sure you `ll agree will make a brilliant group photo!

Broadmeadow Project

Easter Saturday saw the Club organise a Football Fun day for local children at Broadmeadow Sports Centre, Teignmouth. Twenty-six children attended the 6 hour football `egg-stravaganza` with skills sessions, a quiz, football games, a penalty shoot out, a timed speed drill & mini-tournament. Lots of prizes were awarded to the talented youngsters and everyone received a participation medal and Easter egg.

The day was held to attract children to playing football. Club football helps to build children`s skills. Of all the children attending five were Newton Town players and nineteen were not playing for a club, although some played for their school teams. Hopefully this fun day will encourage those children to regularly take part in football training sessions now planned for Saturday mornings at Broadmeadow Sports Centre, Teignmouth from 10.30-11.30 am. If the sessions are popular we will extend them to cover up to three hours for all age groups. More Fun days are planned in the summer to attract other non-players into the Leisure Centre and into football.

A big thank you to the staff at Broadmeadow for helping to organise the event and to Teignbridge District Council for their support in making the day happen.

With the success of the fun day fresh in our minds we would like to host more and so are planning regular events for club members too.

If you would like us to run an event at your school or organisation please contact me on the number overleaf at the top of the page. We can cater for all abilities and our coaches are CRB checked and FA qualified. We have our own equipment and can adapt games to suit disabled players if required.

England V Holland Match Report

By Scott Davison

On Tuesday 27th March our team went to see England V Holland U18`s at Yeovil Town. The Stadium was packed with over 3,000 people the largest crowd Yeovil had ever hosted, they even ran out of food at the stalls! Mostly the crowd was made up of children like us from Clubs and Schools from all over the South West.

England played well and it was good to see some of the Academy players. There was the Chelsea football icon winner from last year Sam Hutchinson, Man City`s Daniel Sturridge, Scott Sinclair from Chelsea on loan to Plymouth Argyle, Manchester Utd`s Febian Brandy and Chelsea`s Lee Sawyer amongst the England team. For Holland there were three PSV players, an Arsenal forward, Vincent Van den Berg and one Ajax player amongst the FC Twente, Vitesse & Feyenoord lads.

It was a great atmosphere and all of us from the club were in fine singing voice especially as the England side knocked home four goals against Holland`s one. We all wanted to be out there playing. It was great to have such a big match so close to home and we recognised a few faces in the crowd from Newton Abbot too.

The cheers from the crowd were deafening as England scored and they easily compared with a premiership match or the millennium stadium.

We cant wait for the next big game !
