After a 2 month hibernation competitive football returned today, due to heavy ground at Coach Road, Newton ‘66 kindly reversed the fixture.
This game definitely blew away any cobwebs as both teams really started well. The new look Newton Town stripes soon got into their stride. Battling well in defence, through Dominic Osborne and Luke Selley, shutting out any ‘66 threats. The midfield trio of; Dillon Yardley, Declan Gregory and Daniyil Borysenko were making nuisances of themselves and feeding the dangerous front pairing of Tyler Bidgood and Gavin Lake. After a spell of pressure and numerous corners the Town stripes took the lead, a Gavin Lake corner was struck hard towards goal where well placed Dominic Osborne fired home the first goal of the game.
This inspired ‘66 to respond and a good ball down the side of the pitch saw the ‘66 striker bearing down on goal, without a moment’s hesitation, Town keeper Rostic Borysenko was out of his goal and bravely diving at the striker’s feet. Goal avoided.
Newton Town stripes continued to press and a ball down the wing from roving defender Dominic Osborne landed at Tyler Bidgood’s feet, a quick side step and left foot drive slips past the ‘66 keeper and into the net. Town were now 2 goals to the good, soon after the ref blows for half time.
Into the second half and it was Newton Town stripes that were dominating proceedings, the ‘66 goalkeeper made several saves and Town were pressing all over the pitch. Shots from striker Gavin Lake hit the post and long range efforts from Tyler Bidgood and Luke Selley were well gathered in by the ‘66 goalkeeper. The game should have been well and truly over by now, but if you don’t score when you’re on top there is still a chance for the opposition. This came true as ‘66 attacked and a long range shot flew into the Town goal. With just a 1 goal lead after having so many chances, Town were determined to hang onto their advantage, typified by young Kian Gentry making important challenges in midfield, they did just that. A brilliant effort by this newly formed side, every player played their part in an exciting game.
