Town took their full squad of 10 players to Apollo – familiar rivals over the last 18 months and recent matches have always produced highly entertaining encounters. This was to be no different.
Town started playing down the slope and were quick to impose themselves on the game, with some excellent running from Cameron and Thomas down the flanks interspersed with creative passing through Jay, Jack T and Matt. Jack C in goal and Harry Hingston in defence did not have a great deal to contend with in the opening stages, as Town played the majority of their football in the opposition half.
As the half wore on Town began to change some tiring legs, with Joe coming on for Jay in midfield and then Josh replacing Cameron out wide. For all of their pressure, Town struggled to find the opening goal due to a mixture of good goalkeeping and a few near misses. However after making another substitution it was Harry Haskell, only on the pitch for a couple of minutes, who produced a stunning long range effort which clipped the underside of the crossbar and nestled in the back of the net for 1-0. Into the second half and Josh continued where he finished the first half, playing a superb game out wide, first on the right wing and then on the left, winning countless balls through good tackling and then setting up attacks with intelligent passing. It was especially pleasing to see Town passing confidently and moving off the ball to great effect, and it looked a matter of time before Town extended their lead. However it was the home side who scored next, as Town perhaps tried to be too clever around their own box and Apollo stole the ball and finished confidently to make it 1-1. Soon after that Town went back onto the attack and scored a second goal with Jack T firing home after a melee in the Apollo box to restore the lead. However the lead was short lived as Apollo worked a quick breakaway down the slope and another good finish gave Jack C no chance for 2-2. The game was now a thrilling end to end affair, and it was no surprise when Town went back on the attack again and scored their best goal of the game with a 4 player move started by Josh down the left wing and finished by Thomas at the far post for 3-2. Yet more chances at both ends, but it was Apollo who scored again with another incisive break that caught Town flat footed, and yet more competent finishing saw things levelled yet again at 3-3. And in a cruel twist of fate another Apollo attack saw the ball drop invitingly for the home team to power the decisive seventh goal into the far corner. In gutsy fashion Town kept on attacking and it was fitting that the final whistle blew after Town had forced a succession of throw ins deep in the Apollo half. Although the game ended in a defeat, it seemed to most of the Town players and spectators that they had won the game after playing such attractive attacking football. All credit to Apollo who took their chances with great skill and defended resolutely, and with all of their players contributing hugely to a breath-taking game of football.
Any of the Town players could have been awarded the Player of the Match, but the vote just went to Josh for his energy and quality down both flanks.
Congratulations to Jack T, Thomas and Harry Haskell who all scored great goals, and Town will again aim to build on this performance in their next game.
