Town produced a much improved performance to play their part in a great game of football which showcased some of the best talent in South Devon junior football.
Playing down the slope, Town started the game in committed style with Harry Hingston playing as a lone defender behind a 4 man midfield with Matt Groves up front. As requested in the pre-match team talk, Town’s speedy midfielders Thomas Andrews and Cameron Smith were helping out with defensive duties, while also helping to get Town going forward.
The first quarter of the game was very level, although the home side spurned a golden chance when they couldn’t quite apply a touch to a ball that trickled in front of the Town goal. Town themselves had some good long range efforts with Jack Tomlinson and Matt Groves both producing saves from the Marldon ‘keeper.
However Marldon scored a stunning long range effort which gave Jack Clarkson no chance, and soon after the goal the half time whistle went. Town had to play up the slope in the second half, but continued their whole hearted display with Jay Moulton and Josh Hammett working hard to shore up the middle of the park. The balance of play had become more in the Town half, but for all their pressure Marldon could not find another goal and with a few minutes remaining Town started to press for an equalizer, although they were restricted to a couple of Harry Haskell long range efforts that did not threaten the target.
In the final minute a Marldon corner found its way in to the Town net, and soon after the game had ended. The performance by all of the Town players was excellent, and selecting a man of the match was a hard decision – the eventual winner being Jack Clarkson for a number of good saves just in front of several other worthy candidates. |
