Newton Town U11 Red team entertained a Waldon Athletic team who were relegated from the first division last season. We started with Alfie in goal, Liam, Callum and Nathan across the back and Jake and Sam up front.
The game started brightly with lots of space for both teams to utilise, but it was a poor goal kick which led to the opening goal. Alfie in the Town goal kicked straight to a Waldon striker, who ran through the spaces and slotted home from 10 yards. 0-1
After that the Town side started to get their act together. A long ball from the impressive Tim, found Jake in the box, who flicked the ball over his head, swivelled and struck a left foot volley which gave the Waldon keeper no chance. 1-1
Tim was bossing the midfield and striking some beautiful long shots which were getting closer.
Half time, Nathan came off for Dan, Sam came off for Joe and Tim was replaced by Matt.
The second half started as the first had finished, with Town on top. Matt coming on at half time took advantage of his fresh legs and ran the Waldon defence ragged as he exchanged with Jake in the box and slotted home. 2-1
The Waldon heads dropped and Town took full advantage as most of the second half was played on the front foot. This occasionally left the Town defence exposed and good work from Liam, Matt, Callum and Dan kept the Town in front.
Some poor kicking, this time from the Waldon keeper saw Jake pick up a loose goal kick and lob the keeper from 35 yards, a well taken and deserved third goal.
All credit to the Waldon team who battled to the end. But Town thoroughly deserved their 3-1 final score. Everyone played well, if not a little quietly and deserved to win their first game of the season.
Man of the match was given to Liam for his no-nonsense defending and great running down the wings, but anyone could have been given it, they all deserved it.
