The newly formed Newton U11 Black team travelled to Kingskerswell Colts for the first game of the 2009/10 campaign. Town started well with Jack Hingston in Goal, Oscar Thomas and Alex Blackburn at the back, Harry Rogers up front and a midfield of Ben Staines, Charlie Taylor and Alexander Pike. Colts came at Town from the start and only solid defending by Oscar and Alex B and some fine stops by Jack kept the score at nil nil for the first 10 mins. Just as Town started to settle, a clearance from defence was picked up on the half way line by a colts defender and an excellent long shot whistled into the goal. 1 .0 to colts. A poor kick off by Town was then punished by some smart running and inter passing by Colts, culminating in a well worked second goal. Jamie Alford then came on for Ben Staines who had run himself ragged, but just as Town were re organising, Colts scored again, followed by no4 just before half time. Town started the second half with Ben back on for Jamie, but by now the Colts were flying and with the sun taking its toll, their experience and better fitness meant they ran in comfortable winners. Final Score 11 Nil.
A really tough opener for our newbies, but some good performances from Oscar and Alex B in defence and Jack in Goal kept the score line down. Tireless running by Charlie, Jamie and Ben and some lovely touches from Harry and Alexander meant that we have plenty of positives to work with.
Man of the match went to Alex Blackburn, with Oscar running him a very close second.
Well done boys, you did us proud.
