Quiz Night - Everyone's a Winner
Town held a quiz night at the Corner Flag Coach Road on 20-Mar. With six teams taking part it promised to be a keenly fought affair with plenty of barracking. Early going suggested a beer or two were vital to lubricate the little grey cells as the teams went through their pre-match routines and limbering exercises. More sustenance was provided by the 'Nippy Chippy!' with everyone tucking into fish or sausage and chips with gusto.
Early honours in the 'Cars in films' round went to the 'Three Nikki's and Co' with 9 1/2 out of 12 who nabbed a bottle of wine for their efforts. Nobody however could deny 'We're getting hammered!' in the chocolate round as they recorded a superb 40 out of 41 to vanquish all challengers.
Meanwhile answer of the night was to the question 'Who wrote Brighton Rock?' with the response being Alvin Stardust. At the end of the day the defending champions 'Bagpuss' proved too strong for the rest of the field triumphing by three points. Congratulations to Lee Morgan and crew who once again showed the glory and title of NTFC quiz winners meant more than the prize by donating their winnings back to the club.

Dear U9’s Parents
Well it was great to finally get back to training and matches last weekend – long may it continue!
As you may know, before Christmas we looked at the structure of the Under 9’s age group and decided to withdraw the ‘Black’ team from the league. The main reasons for this were that it was a struggle to get enough players to make a team each week, and also not having a regular “manager” to organise things on a match day.
We are committed to giving all players the opportunity to participate in matches, and therefore we will be aiming to arrange a number of friendly matches either after training on Saturday, or alongside League matches on Sundays, so that every player has the opportunity to play games. However this also means we have a large number of players available for league games and we have to find a way in which to decide who plays in these games.
In terms of the ‘League’ matches, we have taken the decision to move towards a merit-based selection policy. The three of us (Ian, Chris and Richard) will meet each week to select a squad of 10 (or possibly 11) players to play in the league game each Sunday. Every player within the group will be considered for selection, and we will take into account a number of factors such as previous performances (either in league or friendly games), attitude within training/matches and commitment to both training and matches. Any player who is more than one month behind on club fees will not be selected. (It is also club policy that continued non-payment will result in the player being excluded from all activity until the matter is resolved).
No one player is “guaranteed” their place in the squad, and it is likely there will be changes to the squad each week. Obviously there will also be some natural rotation due to players being unavailable each week.
We also have one eye on next season, when the children will move into the Under 10 age group which is classed as “competitive football” – i.e. there are league tables with “promotion” and “relegation” between leagues. We are aiming to have one team in the top division of the Under 10 league, and this will be decided on results between now and the end of this season.
In reaching this situation, we have tried to look at all possible options for accommodating 18 players and their individual aspirations. We feel that this system gives all children the incentive to work hard and rewards those who demonstrate a good attitude to all football activities.
All of this will be explained to the children at training, and we would ask for everyone’s support as we begin this transition towards competitive football.
One final request is if you could please let Ian know in advance if any child cannot make Saturday training on any particular week. If a child is not at training on Saturday without prior warning, we will assume that they are also unavailable to play on the following day (Sunday) and make appropriate changes to the squad if necessary.
Best wishes
Chris, Ian and Richard

GEARING UP FOR THE 2009 SEASON
We are now just a few weeks away from the start of the 2009/10 season, and the club is making final preperations (for all teams at Under 8's and older) to put everything in place for the first games on Sunday 13th September.
Firstly we need to ensure all players have the correct registrations with both the Pioneer League and Devon FA. For players who were registered with any Newton Town team last season, all that is needed is for each PLAYER to sign a re-registration form. Team managers have these forms, and will be handing them out at training. If for any reason you have a Devon FA player passport card, please ensure that is handed to your team manager before the start of the season.
For new players who have joined the club and not previously registered, we need a completed registration form and also a digital photograph, which is sent to Devon FA to obtain the player passport. Again, team managers will be obtaining photos and getting registration forms filled in in the next few weeks, so please help them by getting your information completed on time.
Secondly, we need to ensure all our teams have the correct kit. Some teams have already got a new kit for this coming season, while other players may have picked up various items of spare kit during last season, or have kit that does not fit any more. In any case, can you please return any unrequired kit to your team manager and let them know if you need new/replacement kit instead.
Finally, for all teams who play matches there are lots of jobs that need doing each mathch day, from putting up goal nets to filling in the result sheet and writing a match summary for the web site! As the saying goes, "many hands make light work" so if you are able to do something to help on a match day - please do!
One area where we always need help is in referee's for home matches at mini soccer age groups (Under 11 and younger). Refereeing these games is usually pretty straight forward and can be highly rewarding. Anyone interested in refereeing can attend a basic Level 1 referees course funded by the club, and will be making a valuable contribution to the club - so please get in touch with your team manager!
Many thanks - The Committee

Sat 23rd May was Kit Swap Day
Over the last few months the club has been building up an inventory of lost/ unwanted items. Therefore we have decided to run a kit swap day on Sat 23rd May during training at Coach Road.
We are asking for parents to dig out any unwanted or too small items of kit. For a small donation to the club (50p per item) parents will be able to recover or buy any item. Anything from boots, trainers, shin pads, shirts etc will be most welcome. Please give the items to your manager/ coach or bring them along on the day.

Posted May 2009 Dear Parent
It has been a little while since the last e-mail newsletter, as in general things have been a little quieter now that we have reached the end of the "league" football season. However things continue to develop at the club, so there are a few things to remind you of, as follows...
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
As you should know, the clubs AGM takes place on Monday 11th May at the Highweek Village Inn, starting 7.30pm. The main business of the AGM is to elect club officers and team managers for the next 12 months, so if you want to be involved in shaping the future of the club then please do come along.
Any parent or interest adult may stand for election for any of the committee or team manager positions. We are particularly keen to fill 2 vacant posts - firstly "Social Secretary", so that we may have more fun events away from the football pitch during the next 12 months - and secondly Under 12s Manager/Coach. As you may know our current manager/coach Graham Taylor is standing down from the role and we therefore would invite anyone with an interest in coaching or managing a team to come forward and get involved.
TEAMS FOR 2009/10 SEASON
We are also already planning for next season, and although September may seem a little way off yet it is important that we lay the foundations in the next few weeks.
At present we are intending to run the following teams in 09/10:-
Under 7s
Under 8s
Under 9s
Under 11s "Red"
Under 11s "Black"
Under 12s
Under 16s
However traditionally at this time of year players tend to come and go (we hope in our case that more will come than will go!) and things may yet change. We are currently looking at running a new girls football session for older girls (12 - 16 years) and we hope to have more details available soon so keep checking the web site for details.
PRESENTATION DAY
Dont forget that we now need your "booking slips" returning so that we can begin to plan the numbers and make arrangements with the River Dart Country Park. Please let your team manager have this as soon as possible thankyou.
SUMMER TRAINING
Each age group will have their own plans for training over the summer months, so please check with your team manager for any dates wheere training may not be happening.
Thankyou for your continued support, and we hope to see you at the AGM and/or the Presentation Day.
